ArtPolitic - Pro Ana by n0deal ArtPolitic - Pro Ana by n0deal
For those of you who don't know what Pro Ana is all about, it is the abbreviation of Pro Anorexia. If you're scratching your head and asking "what!?" right now you're in the same boat as I was. The Pro Ana movement believes and maintains that Anorexia is not a disorder but a lifestyle choice and encourages people of a similar mindset to pursue their goal to be thin . They also offer other Anorexics advice on how to conceal weight loss from friends, family and health professionals.

WTF? You do what? Hun?! You tell some 14 year old girl who's been conditioned by fashion magazines that she should bare her ribs like Allie McBeal? WHAT?! I'm sorry but I've got to draw the line right here and now. Anorexia this is a very serious eating disorder and if one were to pursue this lifestyle choice they have a very serious chance of dying or at the very least being hospitalized. These people should get some professional help so they can get better and after that maybe they can actually help their peers to cope with and overcome this horrible disorder.

Want to find out more about Pro Ana websites and orgs? Well good luck, I did a lot of digging and came up empty but several major news agencies have run articles on the appears of such sites on the net. Don't believe me check for yourself.

Knowledge is power. Arm yourselves!

UPDATE 12.03.2002 - 11AM AST
The lovely N-Therapy has once again found me a useful like to go along with this. The following is a thread on a message board for people looking for Pro Ana sites. Have a look >> [link]

pro ana doesnt mean they are promoting it, it means proactive, meaning they chose to life that kinda of life. they help eachother stay alive. but if youre not pro ana, you dont understand that bond... very good piece by the way, love the pics and colors combo.

I really like this one. Artwise these colours are just the ones that appeal to me the most and the composition's very good. This piece also spoke to me for personal reasons. Y'know, been there, done that, brought the snowglobe.

Great work, some food for thought.

all of you guys have it so wrong....yet your opinion is very understandable. You are not seeing it through the eyes of a sufferer and you never will. For now I will explain the best I can. Pro-Anorexia/Bulimia/Eating Disorders are for people who know they have a problem. The people who say it is a lifestyle, they either just wish they had an Eating Disorder as a way to lose weight (in that case they got this by watching movies of EDs in which the media glorifies and sends out the message that if you starve yourself for a while you will be anorexic...which is not the case.) Eating Disorders are very lonely, we need someone to understand us, and we cannot talk to "normal" people because they cannot understand us. So we talk to others who are suffering just like us. Also because most people who have ED have been sick for almost half their life, the illness is all they know. And Recovering/giving it up is a very scaring thing. Because our EDs keep us from feeling emotions we were never taught how to deal with, giving up this coping mechanism would leave us without anyway of dealing with life. So we go online and talk to people who are in the same boat as us and willnot judge us for who we are. We DO NOT recruit otherwise healthy little girls into our ways...that would be a cult...we arent a cult. Whenever we get emails, IMs, messages from them asking us how to be anorexic we tell them that there is no way they can just become anorexic. Just like you cannot just develop Cancer if you wanted to..and who would want to. this is pointless...think what y'all want to think but you are all wrong. But keep your opinions to yourself. Because its just those judgementals words that keeps us from getting help and results from so many people dying of this a year.
Think about it.
n0deal Featured By Owner Sep 10, 2003  Hobbyist Digital Artist
You are completely right, we can't hope to fully understand what it is like to suffer from an eating disorder.

I also agree with you that it is important to be able to talk to people who have or are going through the same thing. If you can help each other than I think that is fantastic.

However the idea of group that promotes anorexia as a lifestyle choice is deplorable. I think we both agree that eating disorders are an illness and not the norm. I fully support anything that can help people get better.

I hope this clarifies what this piece is about.
anasmorbidhunger Featured By Owner Sep 11, 2003  Hobbyist Writer
yeah the ones that beleive Anorexia is a lifestyle are the girls who makes comments like "Im Anorexic this week/month/summer. I need to lose weight" they just think its the in thing. They heard one person call it a lifestyle then they all do.

i heard about the pro ana movement a long time ago and i was as baffled as you were... i had no idea such a thing existed
i like this a lot, especially the 'social holocaust in the making'
its a scary thing

Thanks for bringing yet another societal ill to my attention, thats what art is for. Nice piece too.

I understand where you're coming from. Its a disease, and theres nothing worse than when we pull eachother down. I have a few ana pieces up on my page. Check them out. Pop art sarcasm and whatnot. I think you'd like "Beauty is only skin deep".
inkbot Featured By Owner Oct 13, 2002
I think your title, "Social Holocaust" is absolutely horrible. It makes me very irate. I cannot believe so many people are fond of it. The very idea that you have categorized a disease with an act of genocide is appalling. The two have nothing to do with each other! "Social Emaciation" would have been far more appropriate.

Your title is hurtful, and cruel. You may have good intentions, but you obviously know little of the disorder, or of the Holocaust for that matter.

I would also like to make something clear to everyone: The disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, at its core is about gaining control, NOT about achieving a look. I scream this over and over again to people but they don’t seem to be able to conceive it.
AzraelSchroeder Featured By Owner Mar 29, 2005
Keep in mind that the Holocaust in Germany is not the ONLY meaning of the word. Here's the dictionary definition of the word 'holocaust': Great destruction resulting in the extensive loss of life, especially by fire.

i like the political intention of your deviation, and the artwork is great, but i have to add that i canŽt go dŽaccord with the holocaust comparison.
as i mentioned in another deviation, i think when you use terms like "fascism" and "holocaust" too often, they wear out. (like for example "bush is a fascist", no he is not!)
therefore i think the comparison people who die form ana and millions of people murdered by a fascist regime is not good choice, because it relativizes/plays down the massmurder.
even tough i really see your point, because i have met several girls suffering from ana, and i see the social background of them (pressure by magazines, friends, etc...)
i onlay think that we should be more careful with the use of such words (holocaust, fascists, etc..)

for such a fragile topic, this has less comments than i'd figure. i must have been out of the loop for a while because i keep discovering incredible things on this site that i missed when they were first uploaded.

amazing use of imagery and words. until i read your description, i never considered anorexia to be a lifestyle choice. i was always taught it was a serious eating disorder and while i do believe it is a dangerous choice to make, i agree that it is a personal choice. thank you opening my mind.

and i agree that pro ana sites can be dangerous to others, i've been on them for about a year now and the way they poison peoples minds is amazing.....on the chatrooms everyone asks you what you weigh and you get looked down on if you're 'normal' weight
i like the colours in this and how the red in the background looks like blood
it makes a good statement +fav

Very well done. I think, though, that your message isnt really valid. All you see is the side of pro-ana that you have seen. Nothing experianced. How does someone get mad at people who need help, instead of trying to help, or trying to understand both sides. I was into the pro-ana thing for a very very long time. Now I am in disbelief at myself, but I could never be mad ad these people and condemn them for the preoblems going through their heads.

overall...good piece, good art, good all around

penquin Featured By Owner Mar 17, 2002
Very powerful piece. It'd be interesting to hear from someone who supports this though, as the comments I read at that pro-ana site did not seem very intelligent.

"they should get skinny by exercising... "-Stupidperson
Hmm, I don't know if this was meant jokingly, but exercise is ok in moderation, but there's also a disorder involved with overexercising....I forget what the term is for such people, but exercising to the point of exhaustion is just as harmful as anorexia.

You've got to remember that people come in all shapes and sizes and no amount of exercise will make a thick person thin. I don't see what the whole obsession with skinniness is in the first place. Waaaaay back in the day, being big was admired because it showed that you could afford to eat :D (Big Grin) .

Anyways, starting to ramble, so, bold piece there n0deal.

It sucks feeling so powerless.

this is a powerful piece. thank you for bringing this to our attention. i wasnt aware that such things existed. it makes me very upset to know that it does. eating disorders are something that i know a fair bit about on a personal level... pro ana - appealing to adolencent girls.. at the time when society filters effect them most, disturbs me on a sickening level.
