ArtPolitic - Pro Ana by n0deal ArtPolitic - Pro Ana by n0deal
For those of you who don't know what Pro Ana is all about, it is the abbreviation of Pro Anorexia. If you're scratching your head and asking "what!?" right now you're in the same boat as I was. The Pro Ana movement believes and maintains that Anorexia is not a disorder but a lifestyle choice and encourages people of a similar mindset to pursue their goal to be thin . They also offer other Anorexics advice on how to conceal weight loss from friends, family and health professionals.

WTF? You do what? Hun?! You tell some 14 year old girl who's been conditioned by fashion magazines that she should bare her ribs like Allie McBeal? WHAT?! I'm sorry but I've got to draw the line right here and now. Anorexia this is a very serious eating disorder and if one were to pursue this lifestyle choice they have a very serious chance of dying or at the very least being hospitalized. These people should get some professional help so they can get better and after that maybe they can actually help their peers to cope with and overcome this horrible disorder.

Want to find out more about Pro Ana websites and orgs? Well good luck, I did a lot of digging and came up empty but several major news agencies have run articles on the appears of such sites on the net. Don't believe me check for yourself.

Knowledge is power. Arm yourselves!

pro ana doesnt mean they are promoting it, it means proactive, meaning they chose to life that kinda of life. they help eachother stay alive. but if youre not pro ana, you dont understand that bond... very good piece by the way, love the pics and colors combo.

I really like this one. Artwise these colours are just the ones that appeal to me the most and the composition's very good. This piece also spoke to me for personal reasons. Y'know, been there, done that, brought the snowglobe.

Great work, some food for thought.

all of you guys have it so wrong....yet your opinion is very understandable. You are not seeing it through the eyes of a sufferer and you never will. For now I will explain the best I can. Pro-Anorexia/Bulimia/Eating Disorders are for people who know they have a problem. The people who say it is a lifestyle, they either just wish they had an Eating Disorder as a way to lose weight (in that case they got this by watching movies of EDs in which the media glorifies and sends out the message that if you starve yourself for a while you will be anorexic...which is not the case.) Eating Disorders are very lonely, we need someone to understand us, and we cannot talk to "normal" people because they cannot understand us. So we talk to others who are suffering just like us. Also because most people who have ED have been sick for almost half their life, the illness is all they know. And Recovering/giving it up is a very scaring thing. Because our EDs keep us from feeling emotions we were never taught how to deal with, giving up this coping mechanism would leave us without anyway of dealing with life. So we go online and talk to people who are in the same boat as us and willnot judge us for who we are. We DO NOT recruit otherwise healthy little girls into our ways...that would be a cult...we arent a cult. Whenever we get emails, IMs, messages from them asking us how to be anorexic we tell them that there is no way they can just become anorexic. Just like you cannot just develop Cancer if you wanted to..and who would want to. this is pointless...think what y'all want to think but you are all wrong. But keep your opinions to yourself. Because its just those judgementals words that keeps us from getting help and results from so many people dying of this a year.
Think about it.

You are completely right, we can't hope to fully understand what it is like to suffer from an eating disorder.

I also agree with you that it is important to be able to talk to people who have or are going through the same thing. If you can help each other than I think that is fantastic.

However the idea of group that promotes anorexia as a lifestyle choice is deplorable. I think we both agree that eating disorders are an illness and not the norm. I fully support anything that can help people get better.

I hope this clarifies what this piece is about.

yeah the ones that beleive Anorexia is a lifestyle are the girls who makes comments like "Im Anorexic this week/month/summer. I need to lose weight" they just think its the in thing. They heard one person call it a lifestyle then they all do.

i heard about the pro ana movement a long time ago and i was as baffled as you were... i had no idea such a thing existed
i like this a lot, especially the 'social holocaust in the making'
its a scary thing

I understand where you're coming from. Its a disease, and theres nothing worse than when we pull eachother down. I have a few ana pieces up on my page. Check them out. Pop art sarcasm and whatnot. I think you'd like "Beauty is only skin deep".

I think your title, "Social Holocaust" is absolutely horrible. It makes me very irate. I cannot believe so many people are fond of it. The very idea that you have categorized a disease with an act of genocide is appalling. The two have nothing to do with each other! "Social Emaciation" would have been far more appropriate.

Your title is hurtful, and cruel. You may have good intentions, but you obviously know little of the disorder, or of the Holocaust for that matter.

I would also like to make something clear to everyone: The disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, at its core is about gaining control, NOT about achieving a look. I scream this over and over again to people but they donít seem to be able to conceive it.
